  • THE STORY

I found this beautiful dress online and fell in love with it instantly! I knew it was the dress I wanted (I am pretty accomplished at shopping online since I can usually tell how something will fit and look on my body), so I began the search for bridal stores that carried it in order to see it and try it on. I finally was able to locate it at the House of Brides in Glen Ellyn, and trying it on only confirmed to me how much I loved it and wanted this to be my dress. Crazy, because it was the only dress I tried on, right? It was just that beautiful! It has an elegant trumpet shape with delicate organza, and just the right amount of lace detail and sparkle on the fitted bodice without being too much or too plain. In order to enhance the lace details in pictures, I ordered the dress in ivory, which to my delight was the perfect shade of ivory: not too yellow and close enough to white. It was a pretty comfortable dress, only getting a little tight in the bodice when sitting down, and it was not too heavy considering the amount of organza on the bottom. What I loved (that others might not) about the train in the back was that it did not bustle at all, so it gave me an excuse to leave it down the entire day; I thought the effort of maneuvering around it was a bit challenging at times but well worth it! Another detail I was really happy with was with the balanced asymmetry of the dress: the neckline rises up towards the right, while the part where the fitted mermaid skirt begins to flare out is angled towards the left. Overall it is such a beautiful and elegant dress, and I was so sad when the end of the day came and I had to take the dress off, because I knew I would never get to wear it again! :(

  • ALTERATIONS

I ordered this dress in a US size 8 from the store, and I ended up losing some weight during the months before the wedding and had to have it taken in, I think a full dress size? I naturally have a very small waist and full hips, so I'm sure this added to the need of having to take it in especially at the waist. In addition to this, I had some removable sleeves constructed for the dress, so that I could be covered up and very modest during the ceremony and reception and then take off the sleeves once I was alone with my husband. (Second picture shows the sleeves). The sleeves are attached with velcro in the front and back, making them easy to take off and put on again, and they match so well with the dress that you cannot even tell they were an addition. Sometimes they would pop off when I would bend over and hug someone, but overall they were sturdily attached. One note I want to add is the fact that when I had it taken in, the seamstress took in the lining underneath the dress too much, so when I picked it up a week before the wedding, she had to undo the lining underneath and leave it open so that I could fit into it. This does not show at all when wearing the dress, but it does require care to be taken when putting on as the slip tends to ride up. I needed helpers (that's what bridesmaids are for!) to pull down on the front and back portion of the slip, which attaches to the full tulle body underneath the organza ruffles, as I was putting on the dress. As for length, I did not have to shorten the dress at all since I wore monster heels; I am around 5'7".

  • PRESERVATION

I was as careful as I could be with the dress on the wedding day, and to my knowledge there were no tears or damage that occurred. The only thing that happened to the dress was the fact that the bottom became dirty from all the walking I did throughout the day, especially in downtown Chicago. Once the wedding was over, I had the dress cleaned at a dry cleaners that uses pure and gentle organic cleaning agents. After the cleaning, I kept it hanging in the clear plastic bag as I received it, which is exactly how I received the dress from the actual store when I bought it. (I had to have the dress steamed in order to get it to look how it did on the wedding day). The dress is currently kept in a clean, pet-free and smoke-free home.
