Maggie Sottero Emma - Strapless Wedding Dress
I LOVE this dress! When I was wedding dress shopping I kept describing my dress as a gold/champagne color with a 'Vintage Gatsby feel.' After trying on over 100 dresses, this gem was exactly what I wanted. I purchased it at a local bridal boutique, Step'n'Out, in Billings, Montana. The color is technically called Ivory, however there is definitely a touch of champagne to it. The beading on it is ornate and delicate, the lace overlay gives it a vintage feel while the neckline and overall dress shape makes it modern. I also made a change to the back. If you look at any photos of the 'Emma' dress, it has a laced corset back - I custom ordered the dress with the 'Emma Marie' back: industrial invisible zipper hidden by silk buttons. The inner corset kept the dress perfectly placed and secure all day; the corset also eliminated the annoying hassle of multiple undergarments - all I needed was the dress (no bras, waist trainers, etc...). The inner tulle has some wear and tear to it, my shoes unfortunately snagged it as I walked, but considering it was a layer designed to fluff the dress and would never been seen, I didn't think twice about it. I did wear a vintage belt with the dress, which is not included. If I had a reason to wear this incredible gown again I totally would but alas, this Montana girl doesn't exactly have another occasion to.
The dress was the perfect length, so the original hem has not been touched (I am 5'7" and wore 3" heels). I did have to have the bodice let out 1 inch on each side - I could zip the dress all the way before the alterations, however it was too tight on my back, giving the impression of unnecessary back fat. I also had the satin underlay altered to be more of a mermaid style (tight and fitted then flared at my knees) while keeping the lace overlay as is. It created this amazing illusion between the two different fabrics. It also allowed me to leave the lace exactly as it was - preserving the beading and craftsmanship. I did not have a bustle, rather I went a more vintage direction and had a wrist loop attached to hold my dress up while dancing. The loop is attached to the underlay of satin, and then can be pulled through the lace - this design allowed the train to look untouched while walking down the aisle, and then easily accessible to pick the train up. All up I only spent $100 on alterations, which I'm told is unheard of for most brides these days.
I had my dress professionally cleaned and preserved by the Wedding Gown Preservation Company - it has been in the box since I got it back and sitting in my closet.
