Renting vs. Buying a Used Wedding Dress

Renting vs. Buying a Used Wedding Dress

Your wedding dress is probably one of the largest investments you will make for you wedding. If you’re looking to cut down that cost, renting a dress may be a good option for you. Once Wed does not offer rental, but a lot of bridal salons may. It is a less expensive alternative to spending a few thousand dollars on your dress and on average, the cost is around $200. Men have been renting tuxedos for generations. Why should you be afraid to rent your dress? Of course, there are pros and cons associated with renting:

Pros of Renting a Wedding Dress

Cut costs! You can save a couple of thousand dollars (depending on the designer) and that money can be allocated for something else in your wedding or for something else entirely. The maintenance of a rental dress is virtually non-existent. You wear it, and return it. There is usually no need to dry clean or pack up your rental dress. You also don’t have to worry about where you’re going to store it after the wedding. Rental dresses can be very convenient, especially if you’re having a destination wedding. There are salons in places like Hawaii where you can rent your dress and avoid having to pack, fly, and ship it.

Cons of Renting a Wedding Dress

You will definitely have a limited selection to choose from when looking for a rental dress. You must pick your gown from the rental selection. The fit may also not be ideal since rental dresses can not be altered to fit your body. You must also be very careful while wearing the dress, which may make cutting loose on the dance floor a lot more difficult. If it ends up damaged, you may have to pay for repairs. In the case of extreme damage, you may have to buy it. You can’t pass it down to your family after the wedding. Renting your dress takes away the option of saving your dress for generations to come.

Like most decisions you’ve faced when planning your wedding, there are pros and cons when it comes to choosing to rent rather than buy. Evaluate the type of wedding you’ll be having, and don’t be afraid to see what types of dresses are available to rent if you feel like it may be a good fit for your big day!
