DIY Lilac Arch Tutorial

We loved sharing some spring inspiration from Sarah Winward and Rylee Hitchner yesterday, and we’re really excited to show you how to recreate that gorgeous, lush lilac arch today! Keep reading for the full tutorial below.

diy-lilac-archBuilding an arch for a wedding is a job that most people leave to professionals. It is one of the bigger jobs, and there are lots of variables and risks associated with it. You want your arch to be sturdy, no uneven ground or gusts of wind can be allowed to affect its stability. There are endless possibilities for types and shapes of arch structures, but this is one that can easily be recreated by an adventurous DIYer.

1. An arch base: Start with an arch base that can be mounted into the ground. This could be a small or large structure, just make sure it is balanced and can be anchored into the ground easily. These can be purchased at lots of garden or home improvement stores.

2. Some small, watertight vases or buckets that can be wired to the arch to hold the bulk of your flowers.

3. Wire

4. Water tubes

5. Flowers & greenery to fill the arch with

1. Start by anchoring your arch into the ground.

2. Wire your vases or small buckets to the arch. Make sure they are right side up and can hold water. I used six on this arch, use as many as you think you need to make it look full. (The number here will also depend on the length of your branches.)

3. Start filling the buckets with greenery. Make sure the stem is in the water, and then arrange the greenery so that it frames the arch and covers you base. Wire the ends of it back of the arch if they need to be held secure.

5. The great thing about this arch is that you don’t need to water tube EVERYTHING that you are putting on the arch! But, if you feel like you need to have some flowers running horizontally, or in a place where they wont reach a bucket, water tube them, and then wire them in.

Lilac Wedding Inspiration

Lilac season is too short. We love the luscious blooms and rich scent this beautiful flower produces in the spring, and although we’re enjoying warm summer days, we miss it. Luckily, we have Sarah Winward, Rylee Hitchner, and Martha Hatfield here to take us back to the milder days of spring with a little wedding inspiration shoot in honor of lilac season.

From Sarah:

We were inspired by spring, the lilacs in bloom, and the delicate texture of all the spring flora. I love that all of the blooms here have such intricate shapes.  This color palette is a contract to the really bright color palettes that are sometimes present in the spring, but it is deeper and moodier. Perfectly fitting to me for a world that is just coming out of winter, and is dark in color from being wet with spring’s rain.

Notice that amazing lilac arch? Well, come back tomorrow for the full tutorial from Sarah on how to recreate it for your wedding day!

Fashionable New York Garden Wedding

Oh my goodness- isn’t this wedding from Jillian Mitchell a breath of fresh air?! Really, could this bride be more elegant and modern? She looks as if Jackie O has just stepped out of the 50’s right into 2014 (today would have been Jackie O’s 85th birthday by the way). We were instantly enamored with her bold patterned Dior skirt, paired with a classic set of pearls. And her groom is rocking that white dinner jacket. These bold choices together created a most elegant and fun aesthetic for their wedding day.

Saipua’s floral designs are seriously to die for as well, and Jillian Mitchell did such an amazing job capturing the gradations of color and texture used in the decor. They took a space that was already stunning and amplified the beauty by 1000 by adding lush greenery garlands, large arrangements, and trees on the tables. We just adore how they brought the outside garden in for this exciting and lovely reception.
