A Desert Celebration II
To continue our concepts based on famous couples, our wedding scape today is inspired by a turn of the century love story. Two passionate people with a desire to experience the American geography in a visual and tangible expression of their art grew into a committed partnership and marriage. Georgia O’Keefe and Alfred Stieglitz. A little background on the influential duo….
America has produced many great painters in the past one hundred years and O’Keeffe is one of the most popular and easily recognized. People can immediately identify her paintings of huge, colorful flowers or bones in dream-like deserts as her own. O’Keeffe had met the famous art critic and photographer Alfred Stieglitz at his New York City gallery in 1908. Their friendship grew as they wrote letters to each other. In 1915, O’Keeffe told a friend that she wanted her art to please Stieglitz more than anyone else. Nine years later he became her husband. He was twenty-four years older than his new wife. Alfred was a major force behind shows of Georgia O’Keeffe’s work for the next twenty-five years.
Georgia O’Keeffe also had a long love relationship with the southwestern part of the United States. The desert environment was the subject of many of her paintings. In one such painting, the canyon is shown as a huge deep hole of many colors — reds, oranges and yellows. It looks as if it is on fire. Our romantic geography today is exactly that. We took the Cuyama desert valley of California and used the gorgeous light and canyons to set our mood.

This is so fascinating because I am currently learning about Alfred Stieglitz in my History of Photography class and they met when she found out that her paintings were being shown at his gallery without her permission. She went there and asked him to take them down immediately. It’s so funny how it all actually worked out. Ahh, Love. :)
